Getting Started
Complete the tutorial, gather supplies, and choose your first island.
Complete the tutorial
Follow the objectives in the top right of your screen. The guides are in your inventory.
Get your bearings
Review the Getting Started and Map guides. Island colors show which faction controls them; the map also marks traders and resources.
Learn the rules
Review the Trading, Factions, and Watching Eye guides. Reputation affects where you can trade and spawn.
Loot and gather
Loot a pathway box to look for a Flintlock Pistol. Then collect these supplies:
Raid the tutorial town
Follow the pathway to the nearby town. The tutorial asks you to kill English soldiers and collect their currency.
Outside the tutorial, attacking faction soldiers can cost you reputation, trading, and spawning access.
Trade for your first boat
Visit the currency exchange and trade English Crowns until you have 30 Pieces of Eight. Then go to the shipwright and buy an Armed Launch.
Choose your starting island
Finish the tutorial to choose your spawn and ally, then arrive with starter loot. The guide recommends the four European starting islands for their traders. Check the map before choosing.
You can revisit the tutorial at any time.
Before you head out
Protect your reputation
Distrusted still allows spawning and basic trades. Pirate reputation can recover on PvP servers, but not on faction servers. Looting faction boxes and killing soldiers can lower your standing.
Reputation guideWatch the eye
The watching eye uses NPC distance, not line of sight. Nearby NPCs can witness crimes even without a clear view. A hunted eye means hostile NPCs are pursuing you; flee far enough or die to clear it.

Buy with Pieces of Eight. Earn them by selling suitable items, finding pathway loot, or exchanging coins from another faction. A Spanish exchange will not accept Spanish coins. Specialty trades need higher reputation.

Resources vary by island. Mine stone and ore with a pickaxe, collect cotton with an axe, and tar with a bucket. Fill an Empty Bottle at a well or fountain to collect water.
