Sails

FAQ

Quick answers and links to the guides.

What do I do after the tutorial?

Gather resources and build a home for your loot. Then fund better equipment, ships, and base upgrades through enemy-town raids, cargo runs, and player raiding where enabled.

How do I get new recipes?

Get recipe items by killing NPCs and collecting their drops, looting loot spawns, or buying them from traders that stock them. Right-click a recipe item in your inventory to learn it. Learning consumes that recipe item; you can then craft the item using the required ingredients and station.

How do I sail?

Take the wheel of a ship you own or have crew access to, then control its sails and heading to catch the wind. Start with Take the helm for the controls, then read the wind and anchoring guides.

How does the faction and reputation system work?

Your standing with each faction affects NPC hostility, where you can spawn, and which trades you can use. Higher reputation unlocks better equipment and additional stock; some traders also offer better selling prices.

How do I build my first home?

Start with a Small Hut, put your storage and a Bed or Bed Roll inside, and keep your door closed. Chests are unlocked, so store your valuables where other players cannot simply walk up to them.

Why can’t I build here?

NPC towns, shipwrecks, and pre-existing world houses have no-build zones. Choose a spot outside those areas. Flagpole zones also restrict normal building to the owner and crew members with build permission.

How do I set a spawn point?

Place a Bed or Bed Roll in your home. It is automatically assigned to you when placed, and you can choose to assign it to another player afterward. Check the bed’s cooldown before relying on it to respawn.

How long do I have to recover my loot after dying?

Player and NPC death bags last 15 minutes from when they appear. Other players can loot them, and opening a bag does not reset its timer. Loose dropped items and loot from destroyed storage last 5 minutes. Anything left inside disappears when the bag or box expires.

How do I repair my ship?

Hold a Hammer to reveal the highlighted repair spot on the hull. Aim at that spot and repair it using Wood from your inventory.

How do I heal and stop bleeding?

Use a Bandage or Surgeon’s Bag to restore health and stop bleeding. Other food and medicines have different effects. Keep food and water above zero to avoid losing health.

How do I invite friends to my crew?

Open your inventory, select Crew, and choose Invite to Crew. Enter the player’s name; they can accept in their Crew panel. Set door, ship, building, and retrieval permissions separately.

Am I safe after logging out?

Your body stays in the world and can be killed while you are offline. Log out inside a locked house with all doors closed. The offline drain grace period does not protect you from attacks.

Where can I find the controls?

The controls guide lists the default keyboard and mouse bindings for movement, fighting, inventory, building, sailing, and communication. Your saved custom keybindings take priority.
